Peels Q & A

What are peels?

Peels, or chemical peels, are treatments for the skin that work by causing the cells at the surface layer to slough off. This reveals a healthier, more even-toned surface that promotes a cleaner makeup application and minimizes features related to aging and sun damage.

Each chemical peel uses exfoliating ingredients that cause older and more damaged skin cells to peel off the surface. Chemical peels vary in how deep they go, with superficial peels having a quicker healing process and more subtle results than medium or deep chemical peels.

Medical-grade chemical peels at Dr. Badawy Complete Care are straightforward: Your provider applies a chemical solution to the skin on your face, neck, or hands. After a few minutes, they either apply a neutralizing solution or manually remove the chemicals. They might also give you a fan to cool your skin afterward.

What are the advantages of peels?

Chemical peels can transform your skin by making the surface more even in texture and appearance. While you get more subtle results with superficial peels and more intense results from deeper peels, most chemical peels aim to minimize or remove:

  • Dark spots and hyperpigmentation
  • Scars
  • Acne scars
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Sun damage
  • Melasma
  • Redness

You notice a few general improvements after a peel, too. Depending on the type of peel you get and how well you care for your skin when it’s complete, your peel can alleviate dryness and dullness to restore a well-nourished glow.

How often can I get peels?

Different types of peels involve varied healing periods. It only takes a week or less for your skin to fully recover after a superficial peel. You can get superficial peels once every few weeks or so to keep your skin looking its best.

Recovery after a medium peel only takes a few days or a week, but redness can persist for months. You can safely get a medium peel once every few months.
